It’s an absolute must!
Get ready to experience something very special in the biggest Japanese garden in Europe, located in the south of the Maine et Loire department. A peaceful stroll awaits, combining Japanese symbolism and pruning techniques, leaving you awestruck at the beauty of your surroundings. Between mid-March and mid-November, the park transforms, donning a series of ever-changing colours and scents. It’s hard to know which season to choose.Even the Michelin Green Guide acknowledges that this park is well worth a visit. And that’s not all – in 2016, it was awarded a second star.
You can also enjoy the tea room with a panoply of flavours to choose from, the Plant Pavilion with its bonsai display and a shop bursting with souvenirs :)
Why do we have a Japanese garden here?
Château Colbert is the dominant feature in the park, and its architect Alexandre Marcel was in love with the owner’s daughter. He enhanced the site’s surroundings, starting with a French-style garden and then created a “Japanese landscape”. In 1900, he took part in the Paris Exposition and then included some of his exhibits into the garden, such as the Cambodian Khmer temple. After his death, the garden fell into a state of neglect.In 1980, the local authorities in Maulévrier purchased the park and restored the site, with help from a group of enthusiasts who made the garden what it is today.
